Ortho Tri-Cyclen is the brand name of the drug known as ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate. Ortho Tri-Cyclen contains mainly 2 hormones that are essential to prevent pregnancy that are estrogen and progestron. Therefore it is used as a contraception for females. It does not let the sperm enter the cervix due to thickening of the cervical mucus.

As Ortho Tri-Cyclen is a contraceptive it mainly works by preventing pregnancies. It thickens the cervical mucus so that the sperm cannot enter the uterus and stops the binding of eggs and sperm. It also works by stopping the ovulation by preventing the release of the eggs from the ovaries. It can also help by thinning the uterus lining and disturbing the process of implantation of blastocyst.

Uses Of Ortho Tri-Cyclen

This medication mainly works by preventing pregnancies also the birth control pills may help in regulating your periods and can help reduce the acne also it helps in reducing the blood loss during menses and decreases the pain during periods. It also helps in preventing ovarian cysts. Also please note this medication is not used for sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhoea, HIV and Chlamydia.

Dosage And Administration

The active contraceptive tablets are usually taken on the first day of the menses and continued for 21 day daily. Also there are inactive tablets that should be taken for 7 day same as active ones with or without the meals with a glass of water. As for the first 7 days the tablets do not start to work please take additional protection like condom so that you do not end up pregnant during that time.

Pregnancy And Breast-Feeding

During pregnancy please stop this medication as it is a contraceptive and can harm the unborn child if taken for a long period of time. During breast-feeding it is not necessarily harmful for the baby therefore can be taken.

Drug Interaction

Some drugs like aromatase inhibitors, ospemifene, tranexamic acid tamoxifen, and tizanidine should not interfere with Ortho Tri-Cyclen as they may change the course of action of the drug.

Norgestimate

Norgestimate is a synthetic progestin (a form of the hormone progesterone) that is used in combination with estrogen as an oral contraceptive (birth control pill) for preventing pregnancy.
